Umm... okay.... so fast forward about 11 hours. Andee was wrong. Very wrong. We went for that prescribed walk and Michael made her climb every freakin' staircase in Morningside Park. Morningside Park has HUGE stairs. HUGE. And Andee had to climb ALL of them. So by the time they returned to the apt and were sitting down to lunch, the contractions began to bring her to her knees. Cynthia came over around noon and we spent the rest of the day laboring at home. It seemed that the baby kept on reversing her position from Anterior to Posterior presentation (this means she kept on turning and facing different ways). In the early afternoon, Cynthia's friend, Judith, came over and we tried some accupuncture techniques to help get the baby turned to the Anterior position. (Accupuncture had helped the baby turn earlier in the week, but the baby had flipped back by the morning of the labor.) All of the tricks worked and the baby was facing the proper direction by the time Judith left. We continued laboring at home - using the bathtub, the birthing ball, going on the deck, etc. Things were intense, but bearable. We kept in touch with Dr. Lee and at around 7:30pm headed to the hospital. Still plenty of time for the baby to be born on Michael's birthday. This is a view of the Hudson River from one of the hospital windows.
