This is an archway as you pass into the Piazza of Il Duomo. It's very majestic.
The inside of Il Duomo was ornate. There were a lot of mosaics on the ground (although most of them were covered up for off-season). The few that were available had some great depictions of biblical stories. We also went into the Libreria Piccolomini with a cycle of frescoes by Pinturicchio and several holy books with songs and gold-leaf pictures. It was neat, but difficult to follow the order of the frescoes.
After that, we headed to the Baptistry. There we found more frescoes (the majority of churches had frescoes done at this time because they were cheaper and longer-lasting than tapestries). On the Baptismal Font, we saw several fascinating bronze bas reliefs depicting the life of John the Baptist. The different scenes were made by different artists - it was great to compare them. In fact, the entire Baptistry consisted of a collaboration by different artists. It was covered in art. The Baptistry kindly placed big mirrors on the seats so you could see the ceiling without straining your neck.
