Lanzarote

Lanzarote pics

After a long night, the ferry sailed into Lanzarote. It's misty and foggy, but you can see the faint outline of the island behind us. Lanzarote is known as the Isla de los Volcanes. It's full of volcanic craters. Some of which are still active. Makes for an exciting life. It hardly ever rains so all the water you have is desalinated sea water. The island seems to have been designed by Cesar Manrique, an artist. He helped to enforce laws that required the buildings to be made a certain way and color and he helped to design many of the tourist attractions. The result is that you see this largely brown, rocky terrain (with different shapes and designs melded into the landscape by farmers) and these low, white houses dotted throughout. It's really quite beautiful.
