Firenze
This next day was pretty adventurous and fun. We visited about five cathedrals. Now this is a good question: What's the difference between a cathedral and a church? The dictionary says that a cathedral is a large or important church. How do you know when to call a church a cathedral? I think I refer to most European churches as cathedrals because they're always so big and ornate and old. Was the term "church" ever used in Europe? Or did that term come from Americans? Good question.
We stopped at San Lorenzo first. No big surprises. Then we hit Santa Maria Novella. This was great fun. There was a lot of different art by great artists in this cathedral. This one picture is a close-up of an altar area decorated by Filippino Lippi. We also found some Ghirlandaio frescoes and a wooden crucifix by Brunelleschi.
